On the one hand, I would perfer more vocabulary work. I think that ASL 101 is the time that one get's the baseline vocabulary so that we can understand our teachers for the following terms.
On the other hand, I think that perhaps you are trying to teach that ASL is not all about exact signs for everything. There are gestures, classifiers and non manual aspects too. Maybe you are tying to get us to feel free to use that other avenue? If that's the case then the Lego building was useful.
In any case, it was a fun activity.
